HUMBOLDT — This is part 10 of a 14-part series following Nina Froggatte’s journey through police training at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center, Hutchinson.
Froggatte spent last week dodging cones and obstacles as part of the Emergency Vehicle Operator Course training. She said although she had driven a police vehicle prior to enrolling in the academy, this was the first time she drove one at high speeds.
Students were given instruction on when it is appropriate to break the legal speed limit and shown different driving maneuvers.
“You had to drive backward and drive into make-shift garages,” she said.
Making things more nerve-wracking, practice runs were performed with fellow students in the car.
“There were a few scary drivers I would not want to ride with,” she said of her experience in the passenger seat. “Some of them would try to go as fast as they could.”
Froggatte said she hit a few things during practice, but she aced the driving test.
“I enjoyed it once I got comfortable with it,” she said.
This week she will study collision investigation and take the qualifying exam at the gun range.
