The constant rainy weather in recent weeks has put a damper on even the mightest of spirits.

That includes a tree in the 600 block of East Madison.

The tree fell over in soggy soil, its root ball exposed. It fell onto another tree, so it didn’t fall completely to the ground.

It fell between two garages, which appear to have suffered only minor damage, one of the property owners, Terry Taylor said.

It happened sometime overnight last Tuesday or Wednesday morning. Taylor left the house to take her grandson to school and noticed leaves hanging over the garage that weren’t normally there. She investigated and saw the neighbor’s tree had fallen, with the root ball sticking out of the ground and a muddy hole where it had been.

“There was not any wind at all that night,” she said. “There was no crash. It must have just gradually laid over.”

The tree was laying on power lines, though, so city crews came to reroute the wires. A city truck got stuck in the mud in the process.

A tree removal crew plans to cut down the tree from the top down.

MORE THAN 6.4 inches of rain have fallen so far this month, with 3.26 inches on May 18. The forecast calls for more thunderstorms through at least Thursday, with a possible break Friday and Saturday before returning Sunday and Monday. The extended forecast shows a possibility of storms through the next two weeks.
