A record number of Iola High School seniors — 23 — completed a more intensive course of studies, earning the distinction of Kansas Scholars. The curriculum requires students to take more science, math and foreign language classes than required for graduation.

That honor was among the many achievements bestowed on members of the IHS Class of 2018 during Wednesday’s annual Scholarship Night.

“There are people who say that education in America is lacking but I submit to you tonight that when you see these accomplishments that is simply not true,” IHS principal Scott Crenshaw said. “Education — quality education — is alive and well at Iola High School. We recognize students who’ve achieved great things and earned great scholarships so they can continue their education.”

Among the awards, were many firsts.

Olivia Taylor was recognized as a National Honor Society semifinalist, which earned her a scholarship of $2,850.

New scholarships also were awarded, including the Dr. Craig Neuenswander OFG Scholarship. Neuenswander received an award that allowed him to give a $1,000 scholarship to anyone of his choosing, and he chose to give it to an IHS student in recognition of the education his children received there, Crenshaw said. He requested the scholarship go to a student studying a career technical education, or CTE student. Kiefer Endicott earned the honor.

Another new scholarship, the JCI Senate Foundation Scholarship, a one-time $1,000 award, went to Sloan Geddry.

Below is a list of the awards:
