Criminal charges were filed Thursday against an Iola man accused of poisoning an Allen County Deputys drink at McDonalds.
Trevor Hockaday, 22, was charged with one count of aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer. He was arrested Sept. 12. Authorities say he was working at McDonalds when he put a peroxide-based cleaner in the drink of an Allen County deputy who came through the drive-thru. The deputy said he experienced stomach pains later that day but has fully recovered, according to Sheriff Bryan Murphy. A second deputy, also believed to have been poisoned, did not suffer any symptoms. The incident apparently took place in late August and was reported by a Good Samaritan.
Hockadays girlfriend told The Register he joked about putting the cleaner in the drink, but never actually did it. Hockaday was suspended from work at McDonalds but quit almost immediately after returning to work Sept. 10.
Iola McDonalds owner Glen Nichols told KOAM TV: In our restaurants, nothing is more important to us than the safety and well-being of our customers. We are very disappointed by the allegations made regarding the behavior of one of our former crew members. This kind of behavior goes against our food safety standards and is not tolerated. Our organization will take all appropriate measures to gather facts and will work closely with authorities in their investigation.
If convicted, Hockaday could face between 55 months to 247 months in prison, depending on his criminal history.
