Anita Michael had no intention of waiting to see if a precariously perched tree could pose a danger to her grandson, Evan Slife, 5, and his schoolmates, as they cavort on the playground of Lincoln Elementary School.

Heavy rainfall in mid-December caused the tree to partially uproot and begin its trajectory over the school fence.

Michael then called school district officials and city offices — to no avail.

Tuesday, she repeated her efforts and this time was put in touch with code enforcement officers Jeff Bauer and Tony Godfrey.

After making an inspection, they agreed the tree needs attention.

“We’ll contact the property owner,” said Bauer, noting the adjacent house had been vacant for some time. “If we don’t get a (positive) response, we’ll ask the City Council’s permission to have the tree cut, with the bill going to the property owner.”

“You know if we get some ice, that could bring the tree down, and you never know, some kids might be there if it happened,” said Michael, 1111 N. Buckeye St.
