Despite a recent spell of rainy weather, water officials still are concerned about drought conditions in southeast Kansas.

The Board of Directors of the Cottonwood and Neosho River Basins Water Assurance District No. 3 issued a “Water Watch” Wednesday for all members in the district.

The designation is geared to heighten awareness of lower than normal levels in reservoirs within the district, Iola officials announced in a press release.

As a member of the district, Iolans are asked to voluntarily curtail some outdoor water use, and make efficient use of indoor water, such as washing full loads of laundry, taking shorter showers and not letting faucets run longer than necessary.

The water district follows both the Cottonwood and Neosho rivers along eastern Kansas, and includes most of Allen, Neosho, Woodson, Coffey, Lyon, Chase, Morris, Marison, Crawford, Cherokee and Labette counties.
