Three area women — two from Chanute, one from Walnut — were killed after dusk Sunday after their minivan hit a deer south of Iola.
The Kansas Highway Patrol said the driver, Sherry Bingham, 33, Chanute, Ciara Edwards, 32, Chanute, and Samantha McMillan, 37, Walnut, were killed at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday, near the U.S. 169-Minnesota Road junction, after a northbound car driven by Ashley Walters, 20, Warrensburg, Mo., struck a deer in her path. The animal then was struck by Bingham’s southbound van.
The van crashed into the ditch on the west side of the road.
All three victims were declared dead at the scene. Walters was uninjured.
All were wearing seat belts, according to KHP.
