Alice F. Tholen, 86, rural Moran, passed away Thursday, Jan. 21, 2016, at her home.
Alice was born Feb. 22, 1929, in Olmitz, the daughter of Joseph and Frances (Riedl) Bahr. She grew up in Olmitz and graduated from St. Anne’s High School there.
On June 22, 1948, Alice married Paul H. Tholen at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Olmitz. They made their home on a farm near Oakley for a year before moving to their farm 4 miles northeast of Moran. Besides helping on the farm, Alice worked at Allen County Hospital for 10 years and at Gates Manufacturing for 18 years before she retired. Mr. Tholen preceded her in death on Dec. 14, 2010.
She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church and Altar Society in Iola, and the American Legion Auxiliary at Moran.
Survivors include her six children: Rick Tholen and wife Peggy, Garnett, Jim Tholen and wife Vickie, Iola, Carol Perkins and husband Mel, Parsons, Gary Tholen and wife Karen, Edmond, Okla., Paula Nipper and husband Danny, Emporia, and Robert Tholen and wife Julie, Moran; a sister, Philomena Bahr, Wichita; 21 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant twin son John Paul Tholen and brothers Leonard and Bernard Bahr.
Abiding by her wishes, her body has been donated to the University of Kansas for research. The date and time for a memorial visitation and mass will be announced later.
