Carmen Chavez, 80, Osage City, passed away Thursday, Sept. 11, 2014 at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka.
She was born Aug. 10, 1934 in Howard, the daughter of Enrique and Josefina (Fabian) Gallardo. She graduated from Howard High School in 1952. She married Primo Gonzales Chavez on April 2, 1955 in Moline. Carmen had worked for AT&T and for Hallmark Cards for almost 20 years. She was a member of the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Osage City. She also belonged to the Altar Society and Osage City Senior Center. She was a dedicated volunteer for ECAT for 15 years.
Survivors include two daughters, Josie Shaughnessy, Iola, and Selina Chavez, Elgin, S.C.; two sons, Thomas J. Chavez, Leavenworth, and Michael E. Chavez, Fallon, Nev.; five sisters and four brothers, Richard Gallardo and Henry Gallardo, both of Wichita, Mary (Paul) Leddy, Columbus, Ind., Amelia Hall, Wichita, Gloria (Herschel) West, Wichita, Corrie Montgomery, Howard, John (Patty) Gallardo, Howard, Tony (Marge) Gallardo, Valparaiso, Ind.; a brother-in-law, Julius Aguilera, Wichita; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Carmen was preceded in death by her parents, husband Primo in 2008, and sister Beatrice Aguilera in 2013.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Osage City. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Family will receive friends at 5:30 p.m. with rosary recited at 7 p.m. at the church.
