Chester L. “Chet” Bishop, 89, Iola, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2015, at Windsor Place in Iola.
Chet was born Jan. 25, 1925, in East Sylamore, Ark., the first of 11 children born to Charles and Jessie (Caler) Bishop. He grew up at Athens between Piqua and Yates Center. Chet served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946 during World War II. He fought in the Battles of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe.
On May 15, 1946, Chet married Doris J. Stephens in Iola. They made their home in Idaho until 1950, when they moved back to Kansas. He worked for LeHigh Portland Cement Company, Lang Motors and retired from Gates Rubber Company.
He was a member of Iola Baptist Temple and Iola American Legion.
His wife of 68 years, Doris Bishop, survives, as do three children, Stephen Bishop and wife Rita, Independence, Susie Call and husband Terry, Iola, and Judy Slife and husband Kenneth, Iola; four siblings, Russell Bishop and David Bishop, both of Yates Center, Velary Iden, Iola, and Shirley Martinez, Goddard; six grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by six siblings, Alvin Bishop, Ernest Bishop, Leora Bishop, Darlene West, Colletta Williams and Sarai Bishop.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Iola Baptist Temple. Burial will follow at Yates Center Cemetery.
