Evelyn Tait, 78, Chanute, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2016, in Chanute. Evelyn was born on July 6, 1938 in Westphalia, the daughter of Virgil Leroy and Agnes (Constable) Kelley.
On Sept. 26, 1961, Evelyn married Joe F. Tait at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Chanute. Joe survives her at the home.
Evelyn was born and raised in Westphalia, then in 1958 her family relocated to Colony, then once Evelyn graduated high school, she relocated to Iola, where she took a job working in the Allen County Tag Office. She worked there for a year before marrying Joe and moving to Chanute. Once married, they had four children and Evelyn stayed at home to raise them. She helped with the local Girl Scout troop and was a parent-teacher aide while her youngest daughter was in grade school at Hutton Elementary. Most recently, she worked in the lunchroom at St. Patrick’s Catholic School for several years. Evelyn was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Chanute, where she was active in the Altar Society and the Daughters of Isabella.
In addition to her husband, Evelyn is survived by her son, David (Christine) Tait, Chanute; daughters, Lucinda “Cindy” (Cary) Brown, Sun City, Ariz., Valerie (Doug) Newby, Kechi, and Sharla Tait, Humboldt ; sisters, Lois (Kelley) Zoellner, Wichita, and Pauline (Kelley) (Ted) Alexander, North Little Rock, Ark.; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Robert “Jr.” Kelley, Paul Kelley and John Kelley; grandson, Michael J. Cain; nephew, Tom Kelley; and various aunts, uncles, and nieces.
A Rosary will be recited at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Chanute at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Humboldt.
