Joseph D. Katzer, 88, Greeley, died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012, at his daughter’s home in Colony, with his family by his side.

He was born on Sept. 11, 1923, in Greeley, the son of Rudolph John Katzer and Rose Catherine (Miller) Katzer.

Joe married Barbara Ann Whalen on Oct. 8, 1960 in Kansas City, Mo. This union was blessed with three daughters. They made their home in Greeley and farming was his way of life. He loved the outdoors working with cattle, his land, and enjoyed gardening.

He was a member of the St. Boniface Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus of Greeley and enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a social man, never meeting a stranger. He enjoyed going to the church bazaar and family gatherings. He had a positive outlook on life and instilled that in his family. Joe was a respected man of the community.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, on May 5, 2009; brothers, Alfred, Urban, Leonard and two infant brothers, Carl and Dennis; brothers-in-law, Mike Adams and Floyd Sturgis; and sister-in-law, Patricia Katzer.

He is survived by three daughters, Angie Plumb and husband Neal of Eureka Springs, Ark.; Rita Williams and husband Howard of Garnett; Sharon Wiley and husband Mark of Colony; 10 grandchildren, Brandon Plumb, Aaron Taylor, Nicole Newberry, Jeremiah Taylor, Ethan Capps, Kynza Capps, Amy Clinton, Stephanie Williams, Katie Wiley and Dexter Wiley; and one great-granddaughter, Paisley Clinton; two sisters, MaryRose Adams of Shawnee Mission; Charlene Meiners and husband Richard of Lenexa; one brother, Donald and wife Donna of Moore, Okla.; sister-in-law, Peggy Gardner and husband John of Kansas City, Mo.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Scipio, with burial following in the Holy Angels Cemetery, Garnett. The family will greet friends following a rosary at 6 p.m. Friday at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel, Garnett. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Care of Kansas.
