Joyce D. Scharven, San Antonio, Texas, died Nov. 29, 2010.
She was born in Kincaid to the late John Thomas and Frances Thomas Cavin.
Her family moved to Bayard, where her parents ran the Bayard Mercantile. She graduated from Moran Rural High School while living in Iola.
She met her future
husband, Ronald Scharven, in Topeka, which led to
a 45-year journey as an
Air Force wife.
She was a devoted mother, spending countless hours in various parent organizations at her children’s schools, and a talented dressmaker and needle worker. She later became a passionate supporter of animal rescue groups, as shown by the numerous dogs and cats she rescued over the years.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
She is survived by her son, Chris and his wife, Kathy; a daughter, Debbie; sisters Janet and Elva Dean; grandchildren Kristine, Kimberly, David and Kelly; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, with a reception immediately following.
