Former Iola resident Lorraine S. Swanson, 93, of Overland Park died Monday, March 5, 2012. 

She was born Sept. 22, 1918 in Savonburg, to Frank Edward and Hester Anna (Jordan) Stierwalt. She graduated from Savonburg High School in 1936. She moved to Topeka to work for the Santa Fe Railroad Company in 1940. On Sept. 15, 1941, she married Julius Landon Roberts of Topeka. A son, Jerry L. Roberts, was born May 31, 1943. Julius L. Roberts died Sept. 5, 1944 while in service with the Naval Air Corps.

On Aug. 8, 1948, she married Lloyd E. Swanson, a former Savonburg classmate. The couple and son, Jerry, lived in Sunflower Village while he completed his education at Kansas University graduating in 1949. They began working at the Stark State Bank in 1950. Their son, Thomas L. Swanson, was born on Oct. 3, 1951. They moved to Iola and the Iola State Bank in 1958. Both Lorraine and Lloyd retired from the Iola State Bank in 1986.

She was an active member of the Iola community and belonged to Wesley United Methodist Church and Iola Country Club. The couple moved to the Kansas City area in 1996.

Survivors include a son, Jerry Roberts and his wife, Connie, Olathe, and a son, Tom Swanson and his wife, Bobbi, Coffeyville; two grandchildren, Samantha Creedon and her husband, Chris, Aurora, Ill., and Derek Roberts, Olathe; two great-grandchildren, Allison and Kailey Creedon; and a sister, Ollideen Wright, Chanute.

Her husband, Lloyd E. Swanson, a sister, Betty Lyman, and a great-granddaughter, Emma Rose Creedon, preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Waugh-Yokum and Friskel Memorial Chapel in Iola. Chaplain Lloyd W. Houk will officiate. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery in Iola.
