Mary Gladys Fewins passed away peacefully at her home Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013.

Gladys was born Nov. 22, 1916, on a farm near Elsmore, to William Otto and Alice Gertrude Shoup Boler. After her mother’s death, she was raised by her father, older sister Wilma, and her Grandma Shoup. After her sister married and her grandmother died, she was on her own with her brother Floyd and father. She spent time in the fields with them and time with her neighbor, Daisy Ashby, who later became her stepmother. Gladys often said she could not have asked for a better father, sister and brother.

On Oct. 12, 1935, she married Bert Fewins at Fort Scott. They lived on a farm west of Elsmore for two years and then moved across the road to Bert’s home place when his folks moved to town in 1938. She has lived there ever since. She worked on the farm and raised eight children,  who survive: Marjorie Davis and husband Paul, Chanute, Dick Fewins and wife Vera, Elsmore, Gary Fewins and wife Meredith, Moran, Jim Fewins and wife Janice, Redfield, Dave Fewins, Humboldt, Janice Rake, Redfield, Cheryl Seymour and husband Mark, Ottawa, and Bill Fewins, Savonburg. She had 20 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and her beloved nieces, nephews and families.

Bert died in 1995. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Floyd Boler; sister, Wilma Parrott; step-sister, Carolyn Colwell; daughter-in-law, Pam Fewins; son-in-law, Carl Grady; grandson, Mike Moran, and great-grandson Eric Neely.

Gladys was an avid quilter and hand-quilted more than 100 quilts as gifts of love to family members. In her mother’s obituary, Gertie Shoup was described as “a woman of many virtues, quiet, unassuming and congenial, and was held in the very highest esteem of the community.” Gladys was her mother’s daughter.

Special thanks to her primary caregiver, son Bill, whose care enabled her to live out her days at the family farm she so loved.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday at Friends Home Lutheran Church in Savonburg. Burial will follow in the Old Elsmore Cemetery. The family will greet friends on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m., at Feuerborn Family Funeral Home in Moran.

Memorials may be made to Elsmore Alumni Scholarship Fund or Elsmore Ruritan Club.
