Mary Elizabeth (Payne) Sigler, 79, Chanute, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2018. Mary was born on May 12, 1939, in Iola to William and Grace (Combs) Payne. Grace Payne was remarried to Earl Ansell. Mary was united in marriage to Richard Duane Sigler on Oct. 5, 1956. They were later divorced.

Mary started working at Wal-Mart shortly after the store opened in Chanute. She enjoyed meeting people while working in her various positions there, especially when she worked at the service desk. Mary retired in May 2001 after 25 years.

Over the years Mary kept very active playing softball, bowling and playing pool. Mary enjoyed taking walks all over Chanute, chatting with whomever she came across. Mary was a member of the Ladies VFW Auxiliary. She later was involved in the Red Hat Ladies social group.

Mary found pleasure in collecting antique flower frogs and gardening. If one of Mary’s favorite musical artists came on Mary would smile and start to dance with joy, especially if it was Ray LaMontagne, Harry Connick, Jr., Carole King, James Taylor or Joe Cocker. 

Mary was a very dedicated mother and grandmother, enjoying many, many, many birthdays, graduations, sporting events, and performances.

Mary is survived by her son, Mark Sigler and wife Linda (Nordt) of Chanute; daughters, Lori (Sigler) Swiler and husband Kenneth of Chanute, Julie (Sigler) Anderson of Olathe, and Diane (Sigler) Haskins of Wichita; and 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by a brother, David Payne, as a young child, her sister Sharon (Payne) Keith of Terre Haute, Ind., brother John Payne of Iola; and her parents.

A visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at Countryside Funeral Home – Gibson Chapel in Chanute. On Friday, Oct. 19. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Mount Hope Cemetery in Humboldt. Online condolences may be left at: www.countrysidefh.com.
