Funeral services for Vernon L. “Bill” Moore of Iola, whose death Wednesday was reported in Thursday’s Register, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Calvary United Methodist Church in Iola. The Rev. Gene McIntosh will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapels in Iola.
He was born Aug. 23, 1926, in Lone Elm, the son of William A. and Vergie (Anderson) Moore. He graduated from Lone Elm High School.
On June 29, 1947, he married Eunice E. Gillaspie. They made their home in Lone Elm where he operated a gas station. In 1951, they moved to DeSoto where they worked at Sunflower Ammunition Plant. They moved to Iola in 1955 and he owned and operated a gas station on State Street known as Moore’s Sinclair Service. His wife helped him with the bookkeeping. He added bulk fuel delivery service which he operated as Moore Oil Company and also began distributing auto supplies which grew into the business known as Moore’s Auto Supply. They retired in 1990. She died Oct. 14, 2002.
He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church and Iola Lions Club.
He is survived by a son, Bill and his wife, Sandy, Olathe; a daughter, Janet Simpson and her husband, Dick, Lenexa; his stepmother, Ruby Davis, Iola; a sister, Betty Randolph, Belton, Mo.; a half brother, William R. Moore, Shelbina, Mo.; three grandsons, Aaron, Zachary and Jordan Moore; and five great-grandchildren.
A sister, Helen Marie Gilliland, died earlier.
