Norman Edgar Sorenson, 76, Yates Center, passed away unexpectedly Saturday morning, May 16, 2015, at Coffey County Hospital in Burlington.
He was born March 9, 1939, in Yates Center, the youngest of eight children of William and Jessie Blanche (Wilhite) Sorenson.
He grew up in Yates Center and graduated from Yates Center High School in 1957. He then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Wichita as a medic.
Norman and Evelyn Ross were married in Yates Center. They became the parents of four daughters, Gail, Shelly, Janet, and Veronica. They lived in several locations including Wichita and Ottawa. They were divorced and Norman returned to Yates Center in 1981.
On May 14, 1982, Norman and Janice Horsch McCullough were married in Yates Center. Norman welcomed her two sons, Chris and Mike McCullough, into his family.
Following his marriage to Jan, Norman earned a bachelor of science degree in plastics engineering from Pittsburg State University. He and Jan moved to Nashville, Ark., where Norman was employed by Poulan Weedeater for two years. They then returned to Yates Center and Norman was employed at Wolf Creek Generating Station in Burlington, performing quality control for 15 years until his retirement.
Norman was a member of Yates Center United Methodist Church. Following his retirement he studied the Bible in depth, rewriting all of the words several times trying to gain a better understanding of their meaning.
Norman loved music. He played the guitar and sang. He was a member of the Pickers and Fiddlers for several years and enjoyed performing for different events for Pickers and Fiddlers, the church, the Yates Center Senior Center, of which he was president, and others. He also enjoyed woodworking, reading Western novels, and spending time at the Liars’ Club, drinking coffee and joking with friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers and sisters, Paul, Jerome, Juanita, Keith, Ruth, and Marvin.
He leaves his wife, Jan; his daughters, Gail Robben and husband Joe, Victoria, Shelly Shrum and husband Jon, Illinois, Janet Schaaf and husband David, Kansas City, Kan., and Veronica Decker and husband Bob, Olathe; his step-sons, Christopher McCullough and wife Stacey, Olathe, and Michael McCullough and wife Janet, Yates Center; eight grandchildren and step-grandchildren; a sister, Sarah “Sadie” Burton, Iola, and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, at Yates Center United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Yates Center Cemetery.
The family will meet with friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Campbell Funeral Home in Yates Center.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Yates Center Senior Center and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
