11 — Iola Middle School has been chosen as one of five in Kansas to participate in a pilot program that could change the way physical education is taught at the middle school level, Merryl McRae, a PE teacher at IMS, said. The program, labeled the Physical Activity and Health/Wellness Curriculum program, will begin with the 1998-99 school year in the fall.

12 — An alternative high school will begin next fall for at-risk students in the school district. The USD 257 board approved the initiative Monday night and appointed Mary Lacy as the school’s director.
