President Joe Biden said in the last presidential election that our country was at a reflection point.
I believe we are way past that point, more like a speeding train heading for a disaster.
During his first term, President Donald Trump said then-Sen. John McCain was a loser because he was a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War.
I disagree with that. He could have come home early, but he said no.
“I’ll come home when we all come home,” he said of his fellow U.S. soldiers being held captive.
He stayed there five-plus years, until they all did come home, showing he was faithful to the rest of the prisoners and a patriot.
Near the end of Sen. McCain’s life, most of the Republicans in Congress wanted to end the Affordable Care Act, which Republicans had dubbed “Obamacare,” thinking that would hinder its success.
Sen. McCain argued it would be better to legislatively take out the bad parts but save the good for the sake of the health of the people.
When the final vote came to terminate the health insurance program, Sen. McCain flew back to the Capitol where he stood in front of Sen. Mitch McConnell and his fellow Republicans to give a thumbs down, saving the Affordable Care Act.
This is called standing up to the powers that be. This is how the checks and balances guaranteed by The Constitution are carried out.
John McCain passed away not too long after this. His wife asked that President Trump not attend her husband’s funeral. He was not there.
President Trump says he thinks he is “The Chosen One.” I believe our forefathers were and are the chosen ones.
Our nation’s 250th birthday is next year. Our forefathers put their wealth, lives and families at risk when they declared their independence from the King of England. They knew if caught they would probably be shot or hanged.
Unlike the majority serving in Congress today, our forefathers had a backbone.
Our forefathers had a hard battle against the most powerful military and country in the world at that time. Benjamin Franklin went to France to get them to supply money, weapons and goods for our military. In addition to that request, France also sent us one of their leaders in military tactics, many of which our military today still use.
Our forefathers beat the British and formed our Constitution. Article I established the Legislative branch, consisting of the House of Representatives and Senate. Article II established the executive powers of the president but also the responsibilities of Congress to ensure he or she doesn’t abuse those powers. Article III established the judicial branch.
