Humanity House

On Saturday, Sept. 29, Humanity House will be hosting its fifth Clothing Drop and Swap. This year, we are asking for Halloween costumes, as every little kids loves a good costume, and it is great to recycle these things. Coats, jackets, and shoes are all needed, along with every other kind of clothing.

School has begun, and lots of parents rifle through closets only to discover that kids have outgrown lots of things over the summer. The Drop and Swap is an excellent way to rid your home of clothing that is no longer needed, wanted, not your style any longer, no longer fits, or you can’t figure out why you bought it in the first place. If you are sneaky, you might be able to get rid of that shirt that your spouse wears that you hate.

It’s amazing that what one person thinks of as not their style or not something they would wear in a million years is the exact thing that someone else jumps with excitement when they see it.

It’s a great way to rid your closet of office attire that is no longer needed. We have people who come in looking for proper attire for job interviews, and it is always nice to have a great selection for them to choose from.

Kids always need new coats. Most kids don’t wear their coats out before they outgrow them, so it works out very well for us. We also have a great need for coats for teens and adults.

The cost of school supplies keeps some families, including my own, from purchasing lots of new clothing for school. This is a great way to replenish a wardrobe for a child and let them shop for themselves.

At 10 a.m., families will start bringing in the clothing. We ask that the clothing be in good shape, with no tears or missing buttons or stains, and that it’s freshly laundered.

At noon, we will lock the doors to our office and sort donations according to size and type of item.

We’ll then open back up from 1 ot 4 p.m. for families to come in and shop for what they want. Every year, we are amazed at the amount of clothing that comes in and out of the doors during the swap. It’s a lot of fun, with lots of visiting and laughter.

If you are thinking about downsizing your wardrobe, but don’t feel like having a garage sale, now is the time to do it. Get your family involved. Lots of closets are stuffed with things that we never wear. Sometimes there are things that we have even forgotten we purchased. When it comes to things, less is better. When it comes to a closet, being able to choose from a few things that you love rather than a closet crammed with things that you never wear is way better.

We hope you participate in the Drop and Swap. And don’t forget to bring last year’s Halloween costume and make some child’s holiday brighter.

Kindness matters!
