Kent Thompson and Adam Lusker, who represent Allen County in the Kansas House, voted Wednesday to override Gov. Brownback’s veto of a bill to restore income taxes cuts of 2012-13.
Their votes were to return fiscal sanity to the state and fund education and other state obligations of the state the next two fiscal years.
The Senate came up short of an override with 24 voting to do so; 27, or two-thirds, were needed.
Sen. Caryn Tyson voted to maintain the veto.
It’s back to the drawing board for how to deal with a projected $1.1 billion deficit through June of 2019. A $320 million shortfall through June 30 also is a challenge. The fear is school funding, already causing extreme measures for school districts to cope, will be slashed more.
