MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Allen Community College’s cross country teams ran in the Memphis Twilight Cross Country Classic on Saturday. The meets for both women and men featured Division I, II and III schools.
Alisn Stevens placed 92nd out of 141 runners for the women’s 5k race. She finished with a time of 21 minutes and 20.12 seconds.
“I was very happy with how she ran,” coach Vince DeGrado said. “She ran 28 seconds faster on a course that was slower this year compared to last year due to the rain, mud and softer footing. I would like to see her improve each meet from last year.”
The men took part in a 4-mile run. The team finished sixth overall. Freshman Pedro Montoya took 9th place overall out of 129 runners with a time of 20:34.50. Brock Artis took 30th with a time of 21:18.76. Trail Spears came in 45th, Connor Immenschuh took 49th, Meshach Adams placed 58th, Jeremy Brittain finished 60th, Ben Najam came in 62nd, Diego Sanchez ranked 73rd, Daniel Driskill finished 91st and Mitchell Greenlee followed at 92nd. Every runner finished in the top 100.
“From the placings, it looks as if we ran better this year so that is good to see,” DeGrado said. “Anytime we can have improvement that is a plus. I felt like they did a better job of moving during the race, sometimes last year we just went out fast and hung on whereas this team is actually going out within our fitness and picking people off.”
The team has been adding more workouts to their routine every week. The men are running 5 miles and Stevens, the lone woman, is running 3.1 miles.
“I believe if we can improve on our fitness each week and if each athlete can improve on their nutrition, sleep and recovery habits we’ll get better as a team,” DeGrado said.
The teams’ next meet is three weeks from now on Sept. 20.
“Between now and then we will spend this week kind of getting ourselves healthy if we have any knick-knack injuries and then continue to improve on our fitness,” DeGrado said. “I like the longer break because it allows you a chance to take a step back and evaluate things that you need to improve on.”
