INDEPENDENCE — A full-court drive in the final seconds by Courtney Stockard wasn’t enough for Allen Community College to beat Independence Saturday. The Red Devils came within one point in the 78-77 loss.
With five minutes left to play, Allen led 66-63 before Indy tied the game with a 3-pointer that banked off the back board. The game stayed tight the rest of the way. Trailing by one point with less than 30 seconds to play, Stockard hit a mid-range jumper to take the lead.
The Pirates held the ball until they took a timeout with under 10 seconds left. Indy had a player drive to the basket and picked up a foul on Darnell Jones-Bowie with four seconds left. After making both free throws, the Pirates led 78-77. For Allen’s last play, Stockard took the ball and drove the full court. He had a good look, but the ball bounced around the rim before falling out.
Stockard led everyone in scoring with 37 points on 11-27 shooting. He also grabbed 13 rebounds. Josh Sweet scored 12 points and Jones-Bowie added 11. Beau Shockley grabbed 11 boards for the Red Devils. ACC out-rebounded Indy 50-44 and had 20 more shots, but it wasn’t enough.
Allen (13-11, 5-2 conference) hosts Neosho at 8 p.m. Wednesday.

THE RED DEVIL women fell to Independence 88-59. Allen trailed 38-31 at the half, before being out-scored 50-28 in the second half. Statistics were not made available.
ACC (5-20, 1-7 conference) plays at home against Neosho at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
