Allen County Community College’s golf team is a young squad for the 2010-2011 season. Golf in the Kansas Jayhawk Conference is a year-long sport divided into two sessions.
The fall session for the Red Devils got under way Sunday at the Dave Dennis Golf Tournament hosted by Independence Community College. Allen County plays in three non-conference tournaments and three Jayhawk Conference designated tournaments in the fall.
There are three more designated tournaments slated for the spring session.
The Red Devils are led by sophomores Rob Carlson, who was the NJCAA Region VI Division II individual champion in 2010, and Tim Stinnett. Stinnett played for the Red Devils as a freshman 2007-2008 but left the team the next year.
“Rob had a tremendous season for us last year and led us to our third Region VI championship,” said Mike Hayes, ACCC head golf coach. “Having Tim back  is great for us because he is more mature and focused on golf.”
Carlson, who is from Topeka, finished 49th at the 2010 NJCAA Division II National Tournament in May. He earned Jayhawk Conference honorable mention.
Stinnett is from Moran and was the Kansas Class 2A high school state champion in 2007. Hayes said Stinnett played well over the summer in tournaments and is returning to form.
Freshmen on the squad are Tyler Roth of Silver Lake, Drew Stevenson of Elsmore, Chase Tjelmeland of Topeka and Casey Bettis of Berryton. Tjelmeland also plays on the ACCC soccer team. Michael Schell, a sopomore from Sand Springs, Okla., plays on the Red Devil baseball team and may join the golf team.
“All of our freshmen had degrees of success as high school golfers. It will take a little time to get used to playing the college game but they’ve practiced well,” Hayes said.
The three Jayhawk Conference tournaments are Sept 12-13 at Quail Ridge Golf Club in Winfield, Sept. 26-27 at Turkey Creek Golf Club in McPherson and Oct. 3-4 at Terradyne Country Club in Andover.
Allen County will also play at the William Jewel Inviational, Sept. 19-20, in Liberty, Mo., and Oct. 11-12 in the KCK Blue Devil Fall Classic at Dub’s Dread Golf Club in Kansas City, Kan.
