The Allen Red Devil soccer teams returned home Saturday afternoon and both teams suffered losses at the hands of Kansas City Kansas Community College. The women fell 2-1 in double-overtime and the men fell 5-2.
The women drop to 3-3 while the men fall to 1-5.
The KCK women jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the first half, scoring on a breakaway behind the defense.
The Lady Devils kept the pressure on offensively but didn’t find a breakthrough until the 70th minute when Hailey Jones played the ball down the line for an onrushing Leigh-Anne Bartlett, who in turn found sophomore Brynn Suddeth, whose header was her first goal of the season.
Defense held up in the final 20 minutes. Neither team was able to find the back of the net, and the game went into the first overtime. Allen picked up four yellow cards and one red in the very physical match, and the red card coming with 12 minutes to play in regulation forced the Red Devils to play down a player the rest of the game.
Freshman keeper Morgan Cossairt played the full game in goal for the Red Devils, again coming up with some huge saves to keep Allen in the game. She had 10 saves.
With 5 minutes remaining in the second overtime, KCK scored the game winner on a corner kick.
On the men’s side, the Red Devils were unable to maintain a high level of play over the full 90 minutes after starting out on fire in the first five minutes.
Wilmer Canales scored the opening goal from a through ball by Daniel Guardado to take a 1-0 lead.
Things went south after that. KCK evened the score with a goal at the 35-minute mark.
Things continued to spiral in the second half as KCK scored again in the first five minutes of the second half to take a 2-1 lead.
The Blue Devils scored on two penalty kicks late in the match.
The Devils made some changes to their lineup, to try and get a spark. Freshman Brevin Allen delivered his first goal of the season with an assist coming from Austin George.
Keeper Alan Ibarra recorded nine saves for the Red Devils.
Both teams will be back at it on Wednesday when they travel to Coffeyville.
