MIAMI, Okla. — Allen Community College’s success on the volleyball court this fall is getting noticed.
For the first time ever in head coach Jessica Peters’ tenure, the Red Devils are receiving top-20 votes among NJCAA Division II volleyball teams.
To celebrate, Allen won its third straight road match Wednesday, a straight-set win over host Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, 25-15, 27-25, 25-22.
“We are so proud of the hard work these girls keep bringing and are honored, but also proud, of the exposure (the top 20 votes) gives them,” Peters said.
In attempting to beat NEO for the third time this season, the Red Devils started quickly in the first set, but saw things begin to lag in the second.
Allen maintained a one- to three-point lead until NEO went on an extended run to take the lead. Allen fought back to tie the score at 17-17 and 22-22.
Danielle Goodman’s kill gave ACC the advantage, 26-25, followed by an ace from Adriee Munoz to give them the win.
The momentum didn’t last long.
Allen trailed 7-0 in the start of the third set.
“We had to work twice as hard to close the gap and quickly make up for our mistakes,” Peters said.
Allen did just that, closing to within 19-16. An extended service run by Halley Scott gave Allen the lead for the first time. An NEO net violation ended the match.
Goodman led the way once again with 12 kills and 13 points, followed by Sidney Keith with 10 kills. Lizzy Huey added five kills, two solo blocks and four assisted blocks. Sarah Charbonneau had 26 defensive digs, followed by Munoz with 23. Munoz also racked up 24 set assists and three aces.
The Red Devils are in Coffeyville Friday and Saturday for the Coffeyville Invitational Tournament.
