Local athletes were selected to All-State basketball teams this past week.
Iola’s Sydney Wade, sophomore, received an honorable mention for her play in Class 4A-II by both the Topeka Capital-Journal and the Wichita Eagle.
Wade helped lead the Iola Fillies to a 13-9 record and an appearance in the Class 4A-II Substate Finals.
“I felt pressure at first since I’m an underclassman, but I was able to take the reins of the team,” Wade said. “The girls welcomed me in and I was able to get better at the point guard position.”
Last week, Wade made Pioneer League’s first team.
“That was a big honor for me, too, since I didn’t get any honors last year,” Wade said. “But, my team helped me get that, which I wouldn’t have been able to do without them.”
Wade still has two more years as a Filly.
For the Humboldt Lady Cubs, Lakota Wilson, senior, was named an honorable mention for Class 3A at the Topeka Capital-Journal. Wilson helped lead her team to a 14-8 record, an improvement on last season’s 5-15 record. In substate, she scored 18 points in the team’s win over Jayhawk-Linn in the first round.
The Humboldt boys basketball team had two members honored. Kason Siemens, senior, and Markiez Pulliam, senior, both earned honorable mention for Class 3A from the Topeka Capital-Journal. Humboldt finished the season with a 17-5 record.
Siemens and Pulliam led the team with 14.6 points each per game. Siemens also averaged 2.7 assists and 1.5 steals per game. Pulliam averaged 6 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game.
