Area volleyball teams end season at substates

Three of the area six high school volleyball teams were championship matches at respective Kansas substate volleyball tournaments Saturday.
Unfortunately, none claimed substate championships.
In the Kansas Class 2A substate hosted by Oswego High, Uniontown High’s Eagles came up short in a heartbreaking three-set title match with Jayhawk-Linn High’s Jayhawks. The Jayhawks captured the substate title and a trip to the Class 2A state volleyball tournament with a 23-25, 25-21, 26-24 win over the Eagles.
“The girls played hard. We had opportunities in the match to finish but fell short,” said Jackie Hall, Eagle head coach.
In the championship match, Uniontown got 13 service points and six kills from Hayden Rathbun. Ashley Nietfeld had 14 kills and Abby Dixon put down two kills. Tayler Shook had 24 set assists.
Uniontown opened the day with a 25-12, 25-16 win over Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcats (12-23). The Eagles had a tough semifinal match beating West Elk 25-23, 24-26, 25-23. Uniontown finished the season at 27-10.
Against Marmaton Valley, Dixon served nine points while Shook had 23 set assists. Nietfeld had nine kills and Rathbun had eight kills.
In the West Elk match, Rathbun served for 13 points and delivered 12 kills at the net. Nietfeld had eight kills and Hannah Travis made seven kills. Shook had 31 assists.
Yates Center High’s Wildcats lost in the opening round of their Class 2A substate tournament hosted at Olpe High School Saturday. Peabody-Burns High beat Yates Center 25-18, 25-23 as the Wildcats ended up at 16-19.
Southern Coffey County High’s Lady Titans climbed into the championship match at the Class 1A, Division I substate tournament at Waverly High School. They beat St. Paul 25-29, 23-25, 25-22 in the semifinals and Waverly beat Bishop Seabury of Lawrence 25-8, 25-9.
Waverly defeated the Lady Titans 25-18, 25-21 in the championship match.
Crest High’s Lady Lancers decked Elk Valley 25-12, 25-19 in the semifinals of the Class 1A, Division II substate at Chetopa. Altoona-Midway High’s Jets knocked off top-seeded Chetopa 17-25, 25-14, 25-15 to reach the championship match.
The Jets and Lady Lancers staged a three-set title match. Altoona-Midway earned the trip to the state tournament by defeating Crest 25-17, 17-25, 25-22. Crest finished the season at 4-30.
In Class 3A substate action at Burlington High School, Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs lost to 3A second-ranked Burlington 25-14, 25-10 in the first round. The Lady Cubs ended up 14-19.
“The girls played hard but Burlington was just too much for us,” said Stephanie Splechter, Humboldt High head coach.
Against Burlington, Humboldt’s Sheri Middleton had two kills and two blocks and Kindahl Young downed two kills and made one block. Hannah McCall served two aces and Morgan Morris had three set assists.
 Burlington was upset in the semifinals by Central Heights High’s Lady Vikings 25-20, 25-19. Wellsville beat Central Heights 25-18, 21-25, 25-13 in the championship match.
