NEODESHA — Little things are turning into big trouble for Humboldt High’s Cubs.
The Cubs were unable to sustain scoring drives Friday due to the “little things,” head coach Mike Miller.
Meanwhile, host Neodesha High powered up 322 yards rushing en route to a 26-0 win.
The loss keeps Humboldt winless on the season at 0-3.
“I was proud of how we competed,” Miller said. “We easily could have given up in the second half. I thought we played better and played hard all four quarters, which we hadn’t done in our first two games.”
But the “little things” such as missed tackles, improper formations on offense and other miscues told the story, Miller said.
Much of the errors can be attributable to another sore spot — literally.
“We’ve got quite a few players playing in positions they aren’t used to because of injuries,” Miller said.
Neodesha scored on a 67-yard touchdown by Anthony Thayer in the first quarter, followed by a one-yard touchdown run by Dalton James in the second period. Jake Scott connected with Taylor Knickerbocker on a 19-yard touchdown late in the first half to push the lead to 20-0. Scott added a six-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter for the final score.
Hayden Boring paced Humboldt with 54 yards on 16 carries. Derrik McCall completed 8 of 13 passes for 110 yards, including three to Alex Murrow for 61 yards, two to Caleb Vanetta for 14 yards and one to Austin Coy for 16 yards. McCall paced the Cub defense with 15 tackles, followed by Hunter Murrow with seven and Jared Barr with six.
Vanetta also recovered a Neodesha fumble.
Humboldt travels to Fredonia next Friday.
