LA CYGNE — Prairie View High’s Buffalos didn’t need to do much swinging to take control of their softball opener Tuesday. They waited until the second game to do that.
The Buffalos led visiting Iola High 6-2 before erupting for six more runs in the bottom of the sixth — without the benefit of a hit — in a 12-2 win. Then, Prairie View overcome an early 3-0 deficit in the nightcap to tie the score before taking a 5-3 lead in the fifth and exploding for six runs in the sixth for an 11-3 win.
The defeats mark the second consecutive doubleheader sweep the Fillies suffered this week. Iola (2-6) returns to action Monday at home against Wellsville. The Fillies junior varsity squad will travel to Chanute Friday.
The Fillies put runners on base in every inning of the opener, but didn’t score until Shelby Reno tripled in Hannah Endicott and Caitlyn Callaway in the top of the sixth. By then, Prairie View led 6-0.
The Buffalos wasted little time with their response, taking advantage of seven walks in the inning to score six and end the game via the 10-run rule.
Mackenzie Weseloh surrendered five hits and and 10 walks. She struck out six.
Weseloh and Holly Schomaker each had two hits on offense. Reno’s only hit was her triple. Callaway and Endicott had singles.

KATIE THOMPSON gave Iola an early 1-0 lead in the second game when she doubled in Reno. Weseloh singled and Halie Cleaver reached on an error to start the second inning. They scored as Baylea Thompson stroked a double.
The Buffalos bounced back with three in the bottom of the second to tie the score, which remained deadlocked until the bottom of the fifth.
Endicott retired the first two batters of the inning before a walk and single set the stage for Prairie View’s Lana Maltbie, who drilled a two-run double to push Prairie View on top 5-3.
The Buffalos then collected seven straight hits in the sixth to seal the win.
Endicott gave up 11 hits and six walks while striking out five.
Baylea Thompson had two hits, including a double, to lead the Iola offensive attack. Katie Thompson and Callaway each had a double. Weseloh and Cleaver both had singles.
