Cowley hitting, pitching key in sweep over Allen

ARKANSAS CITY — A tough weekend series culminated Sunday in a doubleheader sweep for Allen Community College’s baseball team at the hands of Cowley.

The Red Devils, who lost a pair to Cowley on Thursday, dropped two more on Sunday afternoon, 10-3 and 13-2.

The losses drop Allen’s record to 5-10.

Cowley wasted little time in jumping on ACC pitching in the opener, leading 6-0 by the end of the second.

Allen scored its three in the top of the third, loading the bases with nobody out on two walks and a hit batter. Trevor Kreifel cleared the bases with a double.

The Red Devils were limited to five hits. Kreifel added a single to his double in three at bats. Chase Egelston added a double. Sean Maruo and Cole Slusser had singles.

Derek Pike pitched five innings, surrendering 14 hits and a walk with four strikeouts. Austin Weldy pitched a hitless inning of relief with two strikeouts.

Cowley broke open a 2-2 tie with four in the second of game 2.

Drew Walden and Trey Francis scored Allen’s two runs in the top of the second. Walden reached on an error and Francis walked with nobody out. Walden scored on a wild pitch, Francis on Austin Griffin’s ground ball.

Allen mustered only four hits against Cowley pitching, singles by Levi Ashmore, Francis, Kyle Foster and Griffin.

Kriefel took the loss, surrendering seven hits and four walks in two innings. He struck out one. Bryan Enriquez and Chris McPherson combined to give up three hits and four walks in four innings of work. They struck out four.
