COLONY — Brent Smith, head football coach at Crest High School for the past 10 years, has been relieved of his coaching duties.
Smith told the Register in a telephone interview he was notified late last week his coaching contract would not be renewed for the 2014 season. He has been retained as the USD 479 athletics director and transportation supervisor.
Smith has requested to be heard by the Crest Board of Education at its Feb. 10 meeting, “because I’d like to find out what I did,” he said. “This came as a shock.”
Under Smith’s guidance, the Lancers have qualified for the Kansas eight-man playoffs three times in the past six years, advancing to the final eight twice, most recently in 2012.
Under Smith, four Lancer players — Trent Johnson, Micah Smith, Jaden Boan and Kyle Hammond — have been invited to participate in the Kansas Shrine Bowl, an all-star football game featuring the most decorated senior high-schoolers in the state.
“And we’ve always taken pride in having our players be an active part of the community,” he said. “We’ve always stressed making them positive members of the community. They’re good kids.”
Crest ended the 2013 season with a 4-5 record, one year after losing one of its most decorated senior classes in school history.
“We were young, but the kids got better as the season went along,” he said. “We were competitive in one of the strongest districts around.”
