COLONY — It was Crest High Stetson Setter’s big day Tuesday when he signed to play baseball at Coffeyville Community College next year.
Stetson is Crest’s third senior to commit to play college ball for the 2023-24 season.
Trevor Church signed with Fort Scott Community College and Avery Blaufuss signed to play at McPherson College.
The Crest Lancers remain focused on their quest for a state championship title. Crest is the only remaining 2A-1A undefeated team in the state. Rogan Weir is in his fifth year as head coach.
Setter has been Crest’s starting shortstop and one of their most reliable pitchers for a few years now, proving his starting role both at the plate, on the mound and in the field. This season, Setter has smashed a team-high four home runs to go on his resume.
“I like to think of myself as a morale guy. If we need a big hit I’ll jump in and do my best to get that big hit,” Setter said. “I’m willing to put it all on the line for the team. I also like to clean up errors, stay loud and keep everyone in the game.”
On the mound, Setter has gone a perfect 5-0 to start the season and owns a 0.68 ERA. Setter has only allowed three runs, seven hits and eight walks in 20.2 innings pitched. He’s also struck out 40.
“Being gritty and bringing the heat on the mound,” said Setter of how he hopes his teammates describe him as a pitcher. “Defense is fun to me everywhere — infield, outfield, pitching.”
The senior has compiled a .471 batting average this season while knocking 16 hits and driving in 12 runs in 34 at bats. He’s also scored 25 runs and has served as one of the Lancers most consistent bats to drive in runs.
The fact that Setter’s sky high batting average ranks fourth on the team gives a little insight into how good of baseball the Crest Lancers are playing. Setter’s four homers rank first on the team.
“Without having a good team around me it’d be tough but having everyone here is great,” said Setter. “It’s sad leaving this team but it’s exciting to hopefully carry on the tradition for these younger guys and try to coach them up and help them out however I can.”
Setter’s near future is more settled now that has signed with Coffeyville. The Lancer knows it as a team that brings energy and athleticism, matching his skillset.
“They are a quick and athletic team so I hope I can fit in pretty well there,” said Setter.
