NEODESHA — Both Humboldt teams walked away with wins on Tuesday when they took down Neodesha on their own court.
The win moves the Humboldt boys to 10-6 overall and 1-3 in league play, snapping a three-game losing streak and giving the Cubs their first league win. The Lady Cubs rise to 11-5 and 2-2 in league play.
The Humboldt girls walked away with a 45-43 win thanks to a big second-half push.
Both teams were knotted up at 10 points after the first quarter but a 15-1 second quarter put the Lady Blue Streaks up 25-11 going into the half. A 17-8 third quarter cut the deficit to just seven and a 17-10 fourth quarter gave Humboldt the two-point win.
Junior Savanna Puckett had 11 points and sophomore Madison Gean had 10 points, all of which were scored in the second half.
The Humboldt boys followed that up with a 52-39 win.
The Cubs only led 8-5 after the first quarter but a big 21-12 put them up 29-17 headed into halftime.
“I was really pleased with the way we played in the first half,” head coach Dave Taylor said. “It really set the tone for the rest of the game.”
However, the Cubs started to get tripped up in the second half and while they didn’t regress, they only outscored the Blue Streaks by one, 23-22, in the second half.
Humboldt turned the ball over 23 times in the game but balanced out those turnovers by grabbing 15 steals.
Senior Hesston Murrow and sophomore Conor Haviland led the way for the Cubs scoring 17 and 16 points respectively.
Humboldt will return home on Friday to face Fredonia. The Yellowjacket boys are last in the league with a record of 0-16 while the girls are 6-10 and tied for fourth in the TVL.
