HS BB/SB: Humboldt
The Humboldt baseball and softball teams started their seasons off right with massive blowout wins over Neodesha on Tuesday.
The boys won 25-6 and 23-3 and the girls won 17-0 and 12-0.
Both teams move to 2-0 to start the season.
In baseballs first game, the Cubs got up 3-1 after the first two innings. A massive 12-run third inning for Humboldt gave them a 15-1 lead. The Blue Streaks scored five in the bottom of the third to cut the Cub lead to single-digits.
Humboldt managed 10 more runs in the fourth and fifth innings to trigger the run-rule and get their first win of the season.
Six different Cubs had a multi-hit game led by four hits from Gunner Elder and Conor Haviland. Elder drove in three runs on those four hits while Haviland drove in two. Wyatt Seufert and Joe Murrow also drove in three runs.
The Cubs were quick on the basepaths, racking up seven steals including three for Dagen Goodner.
Senior Josh Vanatta earned the win, going 2.2 innings and allowing four runs (one earned) on a hit and a walk with two strikeouts.
The Cubs had little issue in the second game, going up 9-1 in the second inning after Neodesha tied it up at one after the first.
The Blue Streaks scored two more in the bottom of the third to get within six but the Cubs plated seven runs in both the top of the fourth and fifth innings to trigger the run-rule.
Just like the first game, Humboldt was productive at the plate with all of its hitters except one recording multi-hit games, led by Goodner and Seufert who with three apiece.
Haviland and Lance Daniels each drove in four runs and Daniels homered.
Jackson Aikins got the start and the win throwing for 2.2 innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts.
THE SOFTBALL girls were just as prolific on offense and they played two fewer innings.
In the first game, both teams started off with scoreless first innings before the Lady Cubs stepped out to a 1-0 lead in the second.
Humboldt scored nine runs in the top of the third to bring their lead to 10 and scored two more in the top of the fourth. No one scored in the fifth and the run rule ended the game.
