CHERRYVALE — Humboldt High’s baseball team got back on the winning track Monday, following a 10-day layoff.
The Cubs, who had lost their first two regular season games since 2011 in an April 19 doubleheader with Iola, returned in solid fashion with a sweep of Cherryvale.
“These were two big wins against a solid Cherryvale team,” Humboldt coach Mike Miller said. “We had two great starts from our pitchers and played great defense behind them in both games.”
The Cubs took early advantage in the opener, leading 3-0 and 5-1.
Grayson Pearish took the baton from there, striking out 11 and allowing only two hits in five innings of work. Caleb Vannata came on to pitch two hitless innings of relief with four strikeouts.
Jacob Carpenter blasted a home run, while Vanatta, Pearish and Hunter Murrow had doubles for Humboldt. Nathan Whitcomb and Kason Siemens also had singles.
Whitcomb pitched a complete game three-hitter in the nightcap, striking out 12.
Humboldt scored two in the first, one in the second and one in the fifth before erupting for five in the top of the seventh.
“We struggled to string hits together, but came up with some timely hits, especially with two outs,” Miller said.
Alex Murrow and Pearish both had doubles, while Hunter Murrow went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs. Austin Beeman singled, while Alex Murrow added a single. Carpenter and Vanatta legged out two singles. Corey Whitcomb also had a single.
