HUMBOLDT — The pieces are falling into place nicely for Humboldt High’s boys.

The Cubs registered their third straight lopsided victory Friday, taking control early against Fredonia and not looking back in a 63-23 victory.

In girls action, Humboldt defeated Fredonia, 43-29.

In their three-game winning streak, the Cubs have won by an average of 45 points.

While head coach David Taylor is quick to point out Humboldt has faced some young, undermanned teams in those three games, he’s also just as quick to say the Cubs’ intensity is something to behold.

“The last three games they’ve had really good intensity, almost to a fault,” Taylor said.

To wit, the Cubs committed 12 turnovers against Fredonia, many coming as they’ve attempted to get out in transition.

“We’re getting in such a hurry that we’re not waiting to secure some things first,” he noted. “We’re not waiting for our teammates to get into the right passing lane. But their effort, man. They’re working hard right now.”

Humboldt, 11-4, outscored Fredonia by a cumulative 40-8 over the second and third quarters to break open what had been a 17-7 lead.

One key has been getting senior Gavin Page back into the lineup after he missed the early portions of the season with a knee injury.

“That gives us two guys to run the point, along with Drew (Wilhite),” Taylor said. “We’re starting to find our identity. The guys are learning to play to their strong suits, and our freshmen are getting adjusted to the speed of the game. We’re doing some really good things.”

Trey Sommer led the way with 16 points on 8 of 11 shooting — the Cubs shot a scorching 65% as a team — to go with seven rebounds and four steals.

Wilhite was right behind with 15 points on 7 of 9 shooting, five assists, four rebounds and four steals. Colden Cook hit all four of his field goal attempts and scored nine points. Levi McGowen had five points, four assists and four steals.

Gavin Page scored eight points and three assists, while Logan Page scored six points and Colton Slocum and Asher Hart scored two points each.

The Lady Cubs’ victory lifted their record to 5-9.

A busy week awaits Humboldt. They travel to Bluestem on Tuesday, host Caney Valley in a makeup contest Thursday and hit the road again Friday at Fredonia.
