Cubs lose in regional final game

HUMBOLDT — The Cub softball team had its chance at a historic year for girls sports cut down in the regional championship game against Central Heights  on Tuesday in Humboldt.
The Cubs were trying to qualify for the state tournament in their third sport this season, after qualifying for state in volleyball and basketball.
Central Heights broke out to a 9-5 lead after three innings before the Cubs rallied to send the game to extra innings tied at 10-10.
The Vikings struck for five runs in the ninth inning to take command. Humboldt scored two in the bottom of the inning, but fell 15-12.
Senior Makaylah McCall led the team with four hits and three doubles. Rylan Wilhite, Morgan Mauk and Winter Snyder each had three hits with Snyder having a double and home run.
Wilhite struggled on the mound with 15 runs allowed on 12 hits and three walks.
The Cubs finish the season with an 18-5 record.

SEMIFINALS
McCall powered her team into the championship game with a lead-off home run in the bottom of the seventh to give the Cubs an 8-7 win over Erie in Humboldt.
McCall finished the game with a single, triple and home run. Mauk added four hits, including a triple.
Wilhite struggled with her control as she surrendered 11 hits and six walks.

BASEBALL
The Cub baseball team will play at 2 p.m. today in Erie in the regional semifinals against Eureka. The championship game will be at 6 p.m.
