HUMBOLDT — Seventeen hits produced 17 runs for Humboldt High’s Cubs in Tuesday’s season-opening game. The Cubs posted a 17-5 win in four innings then lost 16-3 in six innings.
The Cubs took a split in Tri-Valley League play at home against Neodesha High’s Bluestreaks. Humboldt (1-1) went to Erie for a doubleheader today.
Humboldt played without an error behind the pitching of Seth Nickell in the first game. Nickell gave up five hits, walked one and struck out two for the victory.
“It was one of the better games I’ve seen Seth throw. He pitched ahead in the count, kept the ball down and let his defense make plays behind him,” said Mike Miller, Cub head coach.
Humboldt was up 3-0 when the Cubs scored eight runs in the second inning.
Nickell had a double and two singles at the plate to help his cause. Hunter Morrow had three singles. Caleb Vanatta hit a double and a triple.
Alex Murrow, Grayson Pearish and Caleb D’Armond each had two singles.  Christian Wiltse doubled. Nathan Whitcomb and Austin Beeman each had a single.
Neodesha led 4-3 after two innings and built from there for a 16-3 win. Pearish, Beeman and Nick Wiltse pitched for Humboldt.
Nick Wiltse had a double and a single in the game. Whitcomb doubled. Hitting a single each were A. Murrow, Pearish and Riley McMillen.
