PLEASANTON — As the saying goes, speed kills.

Size can do some damage, too.

Humboldt High’s boys utilized both with devastating efficiency Tuesday, with a lopsided win of historic proportions.

The Cubs opened the Pleasanton Mid-Season Tournament with a 63-4 — yes, you read that right — win over Marmaton Valley.

Humboldt held the Wildcats without a field goal in the contest, outscoring Marmaton Valley 17-3 in the first quarter, 24-0 in the second, 15-1 in the third and 7-0 in the final stanza.

Humboldt head coach David Taylor was downright sheepish in his synopsis.

“We had the speed and the size,” he said.

Tuesday’s contest marked the first action of the season for Humboldt senior Taylor Lassman, who had been sidelined with a knee injury.

“It was good to get him some minutes,” Taylor said.

“We knew this season wasn’t really going to be measured in wins and losses,” Marmaton Valley head coach Gavin Cole said of his youthful, under-sized squad. “The frustrating part is we haven’t shown any improvement.”

The lack of progress, Cole said, can be attributed to the team’s abundance of turnovers.

“We don’t value the ball, and without that, we aren’t going to show any improvement,” he said. “The guys have been working hard. Once we start valuing the ball, we’ll get better.”

The Cubs racked up 23 steals in the contest, leading to multiple layups.

Drew Wilhite led the defense with five thefts, followed by Conor Haviland and Gavin Page with four steals each.

On the scoring front, Haviland racked up 21 points, all in the first half. Thane Meadows added 11, all after intermission, and Isiah Coronado scored 14, all coming in the second and third periods.

Quincy Adams hit three free throws in the first half to lead Marmaton Valley.

The Cubs advance to take on Uniontown at 7 p.m. Thursday with the winner advancing to Friday’s championship game. Marmaton Valley falls into the consolation bracket, where it will take on Altoona-Midway at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
