UNIONTOWN – Uniontown High’s Eagles took control of Friday’s Three Rivers League showdown with Crest High’s Lancers in the second quarter. They never let up.
The Eagles notched a big homecoming 57-46 win over the Lancers. Uniontown remains unbeaten in TRL play as Crest falls to 2-2.
“Our kids came out focused and played well,” said Nathan Hinrichs, Eagle head coach. “Our leaders really set the tone early and we got positive contributions from a lot of kids.”
As happy as Hinrichs was with his team’s performance was as disappointed Crest head coach Travis Hermreck was in his players.
“When winning and losing mean more to me than to them, something’s off,” said Hermreck after the game.
“Our players have to change their mind set quick and until them do we’re just an average basketball team.”
Uniontown led 13-12 in what appeared to be shaping up into a great TRL battle. Then the Eagles outscored the Lancers 17-8 in the second quarter and led 30-20 at intermission.
Uniontown maintained its lead with a 10-4 run in the third. The Lancers scored 22 points in the fourth quarter but gave up 17 to the Eagles.
Brenton Esslinger paced the Eagles with 25 points. Zach Travis and Seth Sympson each added 10 points.
Kyle Hammond ripped the cords for 27 points for Crest.
The Eagles cashed in on 10 of 14 free throw attempts. The Lancers were 7 of 17 at the free-throw line.
Uniontown (10-4) host Chetopa in TRL action Tuesday.
Crest (7-5) hosts Southern Coffey County High’s Titans in a non-league game Tuesday.
