YATES CENTER — Iola High’s Fillies came back in the rain and captured third place in the 2011 Lindsey Friederich Memorial Softball Tournament Thursday.
The Fillies decked host Yates Center High’s Wildcats 13-0 in five innings in the third-place game. That came on the heels of a 12-2 loss to Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs.
Both games were contested in rain.
Neodesha, which blasted Yates Center in the opener of the tournament under dry conditions, defeated Humboldt 14-11 in the championship game. No report was made on Yates Center’s games and the Register’s calls this morning were not returned.
The Fillies took third for the second year in a row — that was in 2009; the tournament was cancelled in 2010 because of rain.
Breail Thompson threw a two-hit shutout for the Fillies against  Yates Center. She walked one and struck out five.
Iola’s Leah Weir was 4-for-5 in the game at the plate with three singles and a double. Mackenzie Weseloh connected for three base hits.
Lauren Toney had two singles and a double. Libby Shay cranked out two doubles and Kayla Knavel hit a single and a double.
B. Thompson also had a double. Holly Schomaker hit two singles and Halie Cleaver had a single.
Iola was up 1-0 after the first inning then scored seven times in the second. The Fillies added three runs in the third and two more in the fourth.
Yates Center got a single apiece from Drew Spencer and Emily Baker.
A weather shift came to the tournament just after noon. Yates Center played Neodesha at that time and it was dry and sunny.
By the time the Lady Cubs and Fillies hit the field, the temperature had dropped. The game got under way but was stopped in the fourth inning for a lightning and rain delay.
Humboldt was up 4-2 through three innings. The teams came back and played in the rain.
The Lady Cubs struck for seven runs in the fourth and had one in the fifth to run-rule the Fillies, 12-2. Melissa Davidson was the winning pitcher for the Lady Cubs.
B. Thompson took the loss, going 32⁄3 innings and giving up 11 runs on nine hits and three walks. She hit a batter and struck out three. Weir pitched 11⁄3 innings allowing one run on three hits, two walks and a hit batter. She had one strikeout.
Hannah McCall led the Humboldt offense going 4-for-4 at the plate. She hit a solo home run in the first inning then had two singles and a double. Kylee Carson had a single and a home run, which came in the fourth inning. Taylyn Wells hit three singles. Davidson had two base hits. Kindahl Young and Kayle Riebel each had a single.
For Iola, B. Thompson doubled while Toney, Schomaker and Cleaver each had a single. The Fillies scored their two runs in the first inning.
Libby Shay reached on a dropped third strike and scored on an error.
The Fillies improved to 3-11 overall. They play in Southeast Kansas League action Tuesday at home against Pittsburg.
