Fillies cruise past Lady Titans in SEK

COLUMBUS — Iola High’s Fillies stayed in the hunt for part of Southeast Kansas League title. They racked up two more league wins Monday, beating Columbus 10-0 and 12-1.
The wins put the Fillies at 12-2 in the SEK and overall. Labette County is 11-1 and 14-2. Iola and Labette County split a season-opening league doubleheader.
“It would be nice to play Labette County later in the season but we didn’t,” said Vince Coons, Fillies’ head coach. “We are just focusing on what we can do.”
Iola steps out of league play this week. The Fillies host Neodesha for one varsity game and a junior varsity game today at Riverside Park.
The Fillies go to Humboldt on Friday. They wrap up SEK play at home next Monday against Fort Scott.
Iola’s Alex Hill tossed a one-hit shutout in the first game. She walked three and struck out seven batters.
Iola scored a run in the second when Brandi Pres-ton singled. Preston used her base-running skills to move around and score on a fly ball and a ground-out.
Six of Iola’s 14 hits — all singles — came in a five-run second inning. The Fillies added a run in the fourth.
Iola’s only extra-base hit came in the seventh when it scored three runs. Molly Riebel singled and with two gone, Shelby Greenwood reached on an error. Kylee McKarnin doubled and Hill singled to help drive in runs.
McKarnin also had a single in the game. Hitting two singles each were Leah Weir, Megan Cook, Amanda Carr, Reibel and Greenwood.
In the second game, Carr was 3-for-3 with a triple and two base hits as the Fillies won 12-1 in six innings. Lyndsi Faulhaber had two singles.
The Fillies pushed across our runs in the first inning and three in the second to build a 7-0 lead. Columbus scored its run in the fourth.
Iola came up with two runs in the fifth inning. The Fillies manufactured three runs in the sixth.
Hill allowed two hits and walked one. She struck out six batters.
Greenwood and McKar-nin each had a double. Riebel and Preston had a single apiece.
