GARNETT — Baldwin High’s Bulldogs were just better than Iola High’s Fillies Tuesday night.
The Bulldogs remained undefeated with a 68-43 win over the Fillies in the opening-round game of the Anderson County High Invitational.
Baldwin presented a balanced offensive attack with strong inside play along with tremendous outside shooting. The Bulldogs hit eight three-pointers against Iola.
“We didn’t match up well inside with them. Our two big girls got into foul trouble early,” said Becky Carlson, Fillies’ head coach.
“We have to learn to block out better and not to foul. Baldwin can really shoot free throws well.”
The Bulldogs cashed in on 18 of 22 free throw attempts in the game. Carlson said the Fillies need to learn to adjust their play according to how the game is called by officials.
Down 4-0, the Fillies stormed back on back-to-back baskets by Kendra Taiclet. Taiclet led all scorers with 20 points plus she pulled down 11 of Iola’s 25 rebounds and had six steals.
By the midway mark of the first quarter, Baldwin had pushed out to a 14-7 lead. The Bulldogs were up 23-13 heading into the second quarter.
They outscored Iola 14-5 on the way to a 37-18 halftime advantage.
Iola’s Kayla Callahan and Kirstin McGuffin each picked up their fourth personal foul in the first three minutes of the third quarter. They went back to the Fillies’ bench and both fouled out in the first 30 seconds of the fourth quarter.
“Our girls played hard but Baldwin is a good team and you can’t give good teams that much of a lead and expect to come back on them,” Carlson said.
“Kendra played a very good game for us tonight. And Maggie (Wilson) had a good game.”
Iola shot just 33 percent, 15 of 45, from the field and went 12 of 24 from the free-throw line.
Kelsey Larson had 10 points, four rebounds and five steals. Wilson had nine points.
Five different players hit threes for Baldwin. Ramie Burkhart led the Bulldogs with 14 points followed by Myranda Behrens with 13. Allison Howard added 11 and Katie Kehl had 10.
Iola (1-1) plays Burlington Thursday at 5 p.m. at the Garnett Elementary School again. Tournament play concludes Friday but time, place and opponent is determined by the outcomes of Thursday’s pool play.
