PARSONS — Iola High’s junior varsity tennis team played at Parsons Tuesday.
“Besides Katana Smith, this was the very first competition for the others,” said Jennifer Bycroft, IHS girls’ tennis coach. “Considering that, I felt everyone did a decent job in their first time out.”
Katana Smith, a sophomore, played No. 1 single and went 1-4. She beat Karleigh Wells of Labette County 6-0. She lost to Elyse Merritt of Labette County 6-0, lost to Bailee Hall of Fort Scott 6-3, lost to Malina Kipp of Parsons 6-1 and lost 6-3 to Erica Springer of Pittsburg.
Junior Audry Payne was Iola’s No. 2 singles player and went 2-3 on the day. She defeated Tori Cartwright of Labette County 6-3 and notched a 6-0 win over Becky Lemke.
Payne lost 6-5 (7-1) to Jenna Bogner of Labette County. She dropped a 6-0 decision to Jennifer Nickleson of Parsons and was beaten 6-2 by Jessica Curlee of Pittsburg.
Freshmen Katie Lieurance and Megan Smith played No. 1 doubles for Iola.
They lost 6-1 to Labette County’s Lora Nance and Kelsey Baker and 6-1 to Hannah Messer and Sammi Carr of Fort Scott.
They dropped 6-0 decisions to Labette County’s Bethany Baker and Katie Harrison, Parsons’ Brea Harris and Kelsey Jump and to Pittsburg’s Emily Hicks and Brittany Wilde.
Freshmen Patricia Haner and Brittany Porter were Iola’s No. 2 doubles team. They lost 6-2 to Labette County’s Jessica Hutto and Caitlin Class.
Haner and Porter dropped 6-0 decisions to Labette County’s Tiffany Sexton and Kayla Kabrey, Fort Scott’s Brittany Burns and Kandice Rost and to Pittsburg’s Emily Boden and Lakyn Long.
