It wasn’t the prettiest of games, but Iola High’s Fillies are making a habit out of winning. Iola beat Prairie View 41-26. THE JV Fillies won 51-26. Jayden Sigg led the team with 10 points. Della Lohman added nine, Brook Storrer scored six and Riley Murray added five. Olivia Bannister and Taelyn Sutterby each scored four points. Taylor Sell, Ashlie Shields, and Colbi Riley each scored three points. McKaylie Cleaver and Toni Macha scored two points. IOLA’S FRESHMEN Fillies lost 17-16. Colbi Riley led the way with eight points. Katie Bauer scored four points, Olivia Taylor added three and Carly Cescon scored a free throw. Iola 41, Prairie View 26
“We started pretty hot, then they adjusted their defense,” coach Becky Carlson said. “It took us awhile to adjust on offense.”
Carlson was spot on. The score after the first quarter was 6-3 in favor of Iola. Addie Haar, Mikaela Platt and Emery Driskel scored for Iola in the first quarter.
Lexie Long got the Fillies rolling in the second quarter, starting it off with an old-fashioned 3-point play to give Iola the 9-3 advantage with 7:15 left in the half. Iola didn’t score again for nearly four minutes, but neither did the Buffaloes.
Over the last 3:30 of the half, Iola went on a 9-5 run. Emma Piazza scored Iola’s last bucket with 53 seconds left. She made a layup, while picking up the foul. After making the free throw, Iola’s lead was 18-5, before the Buffaloes picked up three more points to end the half.
Prairie View made things interesting in the third quarter, sparking a quick 9-4 run. Iola led 22-17 with 1:35 left in the third. Kyra Moore bolted the Fillies ahead with a 4-0 run to end the quarter. She hit a last-second shot as time-expired to give Iola a 26-17 lead entering the fourth.
Leading by 10 points with 1:30 left to play, Moore capped the win for Iola by hitting an open 3-pointer, giving Iola the 38-25 lead. After that it was just free throws.
The win marks a Fillies’ victory over every team in their substate bracket: Prairie View, Girard and Anderson County. The Buffaloes are the only team of those who have beaten the Fillies and that was in overtime.
“I feel like we’re playing together and better than we have all season,” Carlson said. “That was four quarters of good basketball tonight. They were focused and ready to go.”
Next up, Iola (10-6) travels to Anderson County, another potential substate opponent, on Friday.
“That will be another big game,” Carlson said. “They’re all big from now on. We just need to keep playing like we do. Every night someone steps up. Kyra had a good game tonight.”
