DENTON, Texas — The Firestarters, Allen Community College’s dance team, took home a pair of lofty awards over the weekend at the American Dance/Drill Team Collegiate Championship.
The squad, competing against two- and four-year schools from across the country, took home second runner-up in the Division II/III hip hop category.
The competition was intense, coach Mindy Covey said. Allen was pitted against two universities in its division.
ACC’s Kayla Callahan competed as a soloist as well, taking third runner-up in an open division for all college students.
In all, the competition had 27 colleges or universities and 11 solo entries.
“I was extremely pleased with the way the girls performed,” Covey said. “This is the toughest division we have seen yet at this competition, and felt as though we really held our own.”
Typically, there is only one division for hip hop, Covey said. The competition was divided into two categories this year because of the large number of entries.
