CHERRYVALE — It was not a good road trip for the Humboldt Middle School football and volleyball teams Thursday.
Cherryvale’s Chargers defeated the Cub football team 36-20. The Cubs battled back from a 28-8 halftime deficit.
Corey Whitcomb, who scored all three of Humboldt’s touchdowns, scored twice in the third quarter to make it 28-20. The Chargers closed out the game with two touchdowns.
Humboldt’s two-point conversion in the first half was scored by Bryce Isaac.
“The kids showed guys coming back. We just have to work on getting better on not turning the ball over,” said Matt Kerr, HMS football coach.
Inside on the volleyball courts, Humboldt’s A-team came up short, losing 25-23, 25-21. The Lady Cubs are 1-1.
Hannah Hulett served up 12 points and had four aces. Makaylah McCall served four aces in her six points plus had two kills and two blocks.
Biana Ames had one ace among her four service points and one kill. Annalise Whitcomb had one point and Tilar Wells had four digs.
Cherryvale won the B-team match 25-14, 24-26, 15-5. Kendra McNutt had eight service points including two aces and Wells served seven points and had three aces. Ames had two aces and four service points. Whitcomb had two points and one ace.
Humboldt’s C-team lost two matches. Cherryvale won 27-29, 25-22, 15-10 and 25-19, 25-21.
Nisha Ingle and Sara Jones each served eight points. Cara Bartlett had four points served and Aspen Lawson had five. Kaitlyn Gonzalez and Kay Hammer each served for three points.
“The girls played well tonight. We just could not finish out the games,” said Terry Meadows, HMS volleyball coach.
