HUMBOLDT — Improved offensive play, particularly against a zone defense, gave Humboldt High’s boys more than enough cushion to overcome a frigid night at the free-throw line.
The Cubs grabbed the early lead and had control over visiting Fredonia High, winning  55-37.
The margin  would have been more had Humboldt been more efficient at the free-throw line. Humboldt was 4 of 22, evidence that it was aggressive against the zone defense.
“We saw the floor better tonight,” Humboldt head coach David Taylor said. “The guys are starting to act like they get it on offense.”
Humboldt led  30-19 at the break. Fredonia stayed in the game, 43-32, through three quarters before Humboldt ended the game on a 12-5 run.
Noah Thornburgh had another double-double for the Cubs with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Trey Johnson added 14 points and three steals.
Tanner McNutt handed out three assists.
Alex Wilson’s 10 points paced Fredonia.
Fredonia won the junior varsity contest 62-47. Caleb Vanatta led Humboldt’s JV with 12 points. Humboldt won the C Team contest 40-35. Calab D’Armond scored nine points.
